Pray First

The following are some prayers that may help in some times of need.

The Mission of St. John's is to worship the Lord, Serve faithfully, and reach out.

Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen

Healing and Health

God the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you sent your son to bring healing.
We pray for all who are broken in body, mind, and spirit.
Give health and wholeness to all persons. Bless the work of all who care for the sick.
Strengthen them through your Holy Spirit. Where we do not see the healing we hope for,
keep us in the confidence that nothing separates us from your love. Amen.

For Insight

Thank you, God, for the miracles that we are much too blind to see.
Give us new awareness of our many gifts from thee. Amen

The Smallest Prayer

God hears the very smallest prayer,
Nor sends a cross too great to bear,
And though we stumble know and then,
He always picks us up again.

There is no moment day or night,
When we are hidden from His sight,
No wall too high nor door too stout,
To keep his loving care without.

His ways are wiser than our own,
His strength remains when ours is gone,
We must not doubt or question why,
He sends the answers by and by.

And this I know within my heart,
All darkness fades and shadows part,
And that sometime, somehow, somewhere,
God hears and answers every prayer! Amen

For the Lord's Help

Heal us, O Lord, and we shall be healed.
Help us and save us, for you are our glory.
Grant perfect healing for all our afflictions.
For you are the faithful and merciful God of healing.
Blessed are you, Lord, healer of His people Israel. Amen

Prayer in Moments of Despair

God, sometimes I just want to give up Stop dead in my tracks Go off someplace and hide.
I get so tired and don't want to try anymore.
Where can I find the courage and strength to go on?
The hope that things will eventually get better isn't enough.
The thought that adversity builds character doesn't convince me.
The only thing that gives me any hope is the example of your son.
He didn't quit even though He faced death which he conquered in His resurrection.

May what he did teach me.May I find in His life the patternaccording to which I can live mine.
And may I try--at least in a small way--to urge others to keep trying
even though they feel they've come up against a dead end. Amen

In Illness

Merciful and healing Lord, for some reason that I do not understand, the usual pattern of my daily life has been disrupted.

You are asking me to give up the familiar and comfortable routine of my work and to struggle for a while with this unfamiliar and uncomfortable pain.

Lord, sit beside me now and help me to learn the purpose this illness is to accomplish. Help me to see how much and how often I have relied on my own strength, my own cleverness, my own ability. Forgive my pride that will not let me depend on you.

In my illness help me to see that I am truly well when I remember that I belong to you.
If it be your will, restore me soon to health and a life of active service.
Fill me with the life of the spirit, that in Christ I may be blessed and be a blessing to others.
Hear my prayer in Jesus' name. Amen

Prayer for a Restful Night

Be present merciful God and protect us through the hours of this night,
so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of life may find our rest in you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen
